There generally is no need to pay for membership of any affiliate program, be very careful of companies that ask for an up front fee. Although you can find programs almost anywhere you look, those that use Paypal or Clickbank for their payments are he best to use and registering with both does not cost anything. At a later stage, trying different companies to handle payments will be fine but your inexperience in affiliate marketing at this point could lead you to making mistakes that are unnecessary.

The biggest problem when you are new at marketing affiliate products is finding good online help; care must be taken because it is easy to get information overload but there are sites and ebooks to help you. Do not concern yourself about the number of urls you see in ebooks, some but not all, have affiliate links for the author; you are unde no obligation to buy anything. Many free services exist which can help someone new to this business so why not use them while you are building up an income, there will be plenty of time to invest later. If by using some of the free techniques taught by these authors starts to bring in revenue then you will surely know they are genuine and probably worth buying products or services from.

Where possible in you affiliate marketing business, use alternative forms of advertising to increase your exposure and direct people to your site that might otherwise have missed it. By using tracking methods (this is necessary and all affiliate marketers do it) you can decide which advertising methods work and which do not.
